Sensorial Extensions

The Sensorial materials are wonderful. They teach so much and it is genius of Dr. Montessori to create them so that they can be combined to further extend learning and creativity. Now that we've mastered building the tower and brown stair separately, I noticed there hasn't been as much interest in them.

I have drawn (and laminated) only some of the extensions for use as inspiration and a guide- with more to come- as well as some for the red rods ( Yes, I know I could photo them but I think I prefer the drawings). While on the subject of the Brown Stair, one activity my daughter really enjoyed was gently rolling a marble down the stairs- a great activity also acting as a control of error.

Two for One!

Lesson 1: Without the lid the child can hide the animals in the jar, then reach in and feel for them. I photocopied the animals and laminated them into cards. The child then matches the animal to the card.
Lesson #2: "I spy" Put the lid on the jar and the child gently rolls it back and forth on a rug. When the child spies the animal in the jar, the card is turned over.

Playing in the Snow

So, this is what we do when it is too cold to go outside. Earlier this week it was only in the teens and we had just gotten some new snow. I brought some in and gave my daughter and her friend their own tub of snow, along with some sticks, scoops, cup and spoon. They started off wearing gloves, but as the snow warmed they found they didn't need them. The girls spent over an hour playing with their tubs of snow! They had such fun!

Animal Track Cards

I brought these out last week because we've started having snow and when we are outside we always look for tracks. I originally photo copied the tracks from another lesson and made the cards by finding pictures in magazines and laminating. We lay out the large tracks with pictures and name the animals, then find the smaller set and match it to the picture cards. One day we made our own foot print tracks on paper with paint, I cut one out and added it with a picture of my daughter to the lesson. Now we have human "tracks" as well.
