More Fun With Magnets

Both of my daughters (almost 5 yrs and almost 3 yrs) really enjoyed this magnetic activity and it was so simple to put together. Here is what you need: towel, jar or bottle filled with water, magnet, paper clips and a small bowl.

Demonstrate by holding the magnet flat against the glass (and pointing out that it needs to be held flat), visually find a paper clip at the bottom that you will try to "catch". Starting at the bottom, slide the magnet up the glass. The paper clip slides up too.

Once it reaches the top, very carefully, take it out using fingers and place it in the bowl. (My youngest gets so happy and excited about this part!)

Continue until all the paper clips are out.

And then start again!

Great idea! We will definately add this in to our lessons - thanks. :)

Oh, can I ask you a question about your storytelling? I want to add more of that into our weekly rhythm, but I'm not sure how often to do it. I know that several books I've read recommend telling the same story verbally everyday for many days and then using props to act it out. I've noticed that you list a special story for the month. How do you keep from telling it 10 times in a row? My boys would want to hear it over and over and over again! I don't mind some of that, as I know it's necessary and good, but how do you find the balance between too much and too little? Thanks.

I appreciate the comments, thanks. Nicole- I have been telling the story at circle. When I introduce it, I tell it (usually) three or four days in a row. I try to leave the props out for them to use to retell it after the first few times. With my daughters, the minute I am done telling the story (every time!) they want to retell it to me using the props. This can make for a very long circle! What I've done is before I start, I explain that only I will be telling the story today, but will leave out the props later for retelling. Maybe it will help if you tell your boys, before starting, that you will tell the story only one time but they will have a chance to hear it again the next day.
