Homemade Lacing Board (age 3-6 yrs)

This lacing board was made with a wooden base, small eye bolts/screws, and uses a shoe lace. I have recently used this board to introduce lacing. As a control of error (the way in which the child can check for correctness independently) I drew the correct way the string should cross in pencil on the board.

To start, show how to put the strings through the bottom two eyes (left to right). Hold the strings upright to make sure the ends are equal.

When I demonstrate this to my daughter, I touch the eye that the string is coming from and move my finger along the pencil mark to the other side and then touch the eye the string will go through next. By doing this I am pointing out the string laces to the opposite side as well as showing the control of error.

We stop at this point, as she only knows a few steps for tying. I then showed how to unlace by carefully pulling the string through each eye.

  3. Nice idea! Certainly easier than lacing boards with holes, which require toddlers to feed underneath where they can't see.

One thing: I noticed your bow is sitting crooked. You may be inadvertently tying a "Granny Knot", which, besides sitting crooked, is also prone to coming undone. Check out the Slipping Knots section on "Ian's Shoelace Site" for the diagnosis and solution.
